We have all heard stories in the press about the school funding crisis, so many schools are really struggling. Equally, I bet we all know schools that have quite the opposite of a funding crisis. I’ve been into schools recently that appear to have so much money that they don’t quite know what to do with it all!
The inequality in the way that schools are funded can be seen quite clearly at my daughter’s school. A small village school with great results but a small number of children with a Pupil Premium. Over the last few years more and more of the activities that enrich the curriculum have had to be dropped because they can’t afford it. Lunchtimes are covered by the head & the deputy because they cannot afford enough lunchtime supervisors!
The school made a video to share their concerns with the local community and to ask if any parents or local businesses could help by giving their time for free.
Whilst it is quite shocking that the school has to seek the help of the community to fund itself, the response has been amazing – over 70 people signed up to help the school with their time & expertise for free!
So maybe there is a sliver lining….
